For most amateur users, SLR or DSLR means the ability to change lenses on our digital cameras. I do not know all of the technical jargon, but the main reason I bought an SLR camera is so that I could have a wider range of lenses and I could change back and forth. That may seem silly to some users, but that was the reasoning behind my purchase.

I found that normal point and shoot digital cameras did not offer a wide enough range to suit my needs. The lens could never seem to get close enough, or wide enough, or close enough. With the large range of SLR lenses on the market today, I can find just the right one for my needs. So one of the criteria I look for when I rate digital cameras SLR is the types of lens that are available.

And don't forget that you do not have to go with only your brand of camera when it comes to lenses. After market manufacturers make some very good lenses and many times for less money. So check and see what type of after market lens will fit on your digital SLR camera when you are doing your comparisons.

There are times when a digital SLR camera will be the best choice for the situation you are in, but there are others when a point and shoot will be the best choice. So when you are preparing to rate digital cameras, SLR or point and shoot, try to look at the whole picture.
